How Many Soccer Teams Does Mexico City Have? 

Mexico City, is an amazing city, also for soccer fans. In Mexico, and the rest of Latin America, soccer is more than just a sport, it is a passion. Mexico City is home to some of the most iconic teams in Mexico, as the city boasts three major professional football teams that compete in the first division, Liga MX. These three teams include Club América, Cruz Azul, and Pumas UNAM. 

Each one of those teams has its rich history and a very passionate and loyal fan base. Club América plays in the legendary Estadio Azteca. Cruz Azul play their matches at Ciudad de Los Deportes, after returning to their home at the beginning of season 2023/2024. Pumas UNAM plays in the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

Cruz Azul 

Cruz Azul is another prominent soccer team in Mexico City and was established in 1927. This team breathes and screams workers’ class, as it was founded for the workers of the cement company, Cemento Cruz Azul. The club is also known as “La Máquina” (The Machine), Cruz Azul has a successful history, with multiple league titles to their name.

Cruz Azul played in Estadio Ciudad De Los Deportes, until 2018, when the Mexico City authorities had plans to demolish this iconic stadium. Luckily for you, me, and Cruz Azul, they could return to their iconic stadium in the 23/24 season of La Liga MX. Cruz Azul shares this stadium with Atlante FC, a soccer club that was in the original first division of Mexico, but currently competes in the second tier of professional soccer in Mexico.

Pumas UNAM 

Pumas UNAM is also known as Club Universidad Nacional, and it represents the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). It is one of the most distinguished soccer teams in Mexico City. Pumas was founded in 1954 and has become synonymous with academic pride and sporting excellence. The team plays its home games at Estadio Olímpico Universitario. This stadium is known for its historic significance and vibrant atmosphere.
